Workshop:
Italy and the Global Nuclear Order:
Past, Present, and Future

The Nuclear Proliferation International History Project (NPIHP) at Roma Tre University in Rome, Italy, and the Third Nuclear Age project at the University of Leicester, UK, warmly invite expressions of interest for a workshop on “Italy and the Global Nuclear Order” to be held in Rome on October 17-18, 2024.
The workshop will focus on the role of Italy in the global nuclear order since 1945, examining the Italian experience across the First, Second and now Third Nuclear Ages. We are particularly interested in submissions that address key questions such as:
• What are the historical dimensions of Italy’s identity in the global nuclear order?
• How has the role of NATO nuclear weapons on Italian territory evolved?
• How has and does the deterrence v disarmament debate play out in Italy?
• How are Italian political, economic and military elites responding to the technological, geopolitical, and normative pressures of the changing global nuclear order today?
• What are Italy’s role and objectives in the unfolding Third Nuclear Age?
Submission Guidelines: Interested contributors are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 500 words along with a brief author biography (150 words) by 15 March, 2024. Submissions should be sent to: nuclearitaly2024(at)gmail.com. Selected authors will be informed about the outcome of the selection no later than 15 April, 2024.
Scholars and experts from all career stages are welcome, and we particularly welcome interest from under-represented groups. Participants at the workshop might be invited to contribute to a collective publication. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered if required.
